General Description

The Matterhorn Campground is located southwest of Telluride, near Lizard Head Pass, at an elevation of 9,500 feet. Facilities include water, garbage removal, toilets, showers, fire grates and hookups. There are 28 sites; three are walk-in tent sites and eight have full electrical hookups.

Directions from Telluride: Travel south approximately 12 miles on 145 to the campground.

Normal Services Available: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend (NOTE: The campgrounds may be open before and after these dates, but some services may not be provided. Call the local Ranger District for more detailled information.) .

Campground is well maintained, clear and safe. If you have not been in this part of the San Juans before, this is a good area to start from. Number of People Encountered: 11-25 ppl Recommend to a Friend: Highly Report: (17-JUL-01) The camp host was very helpful, the sites were very well-groomed, and the bathrooms/showers were reasonably clean. We arrived at 7pm on a weeknight to find all sites but one taken, so plan to arrive before dinnertime. I would recommend the walk-in tent sites at the end of the loop-- they have a great view of the surrounding peaks.
