General Description

Alta Lakes offers dispersed camping with not potable water. It is located southwest of Telluride off Highway 145 and Forest Road 632. There are toilet facilities. Trailers are not recommended.

Directions from Telluride: Travel south on 145 about nine miles to the Alta Lakes sign, Forest Road 632. The camping area is located approximately five and a half miles east of Highway 145. This is a rough road not recommended for RVs.

Normally Open: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend (NOTE: The campgrounds may be open before and after these dates, but some services may not be provided. Call the local Ranger District for more detailled information.) .

Quiet and peaceful. During my first visit there the fishing was awesome, then I went again the next summer and the lakes had a fish kill. I suggest calling beforehand to see how the fishing is. Conditions: Prepare for intense summer thunderstorms in the afternoon/evening with awesome lightning shows! Bring a bombproof tent to make your experience joyful and dry.
