Emerald Lake lies high in the East River Valley amidst the Elk Mountains. From a jeep trail above the lake it takes on an emerald green hue, that is simply breathtaking. This 12 surface-acre lake supports rainbow trout and good fishing. An avalanche path crosses Forest Road 317 just south of the lake. This snowfield often prevents access to the lake from Gothic. The only vehicle access to the lake after a heavy snow year is via Paradise Divide Road.
Directions from Gothic Campground: From the Gothic campground follow East River Road #317 two and a half miles upstream. The lake is on the south side of the road.
Directions from Slate River Road: Travel west on the Slate River Road, Forest Road 734, passed Pittsburgh. Follow the road as it climbs to the top of Paradise Divide. Once passed the divide, you'll reach a wide open park. Travel through this park, when you reach the end of the park the road forks. Take the right side of the fork, which will bring you to Emerald Lake.
