This beautiful alpine lake lies at an elevation of 10,400 and supports good fishing for rainbow and brook trout. The lake encompasses thirty surface acres of water. A variety of biking, hiking and motorcycle trails are easily accessible from the lake site, where there is also a campground.
Directions from Crested Butte: Drive west on Whiterock Avenue, which eventually turns into Kebler Pass Road. Travel five and a half miles passed the Crested Butte town limits to the Lake Irwin turnoff (marked). Drive one mile north from the turn off to reach the anglers parking for the lake.
Directions from Gunnison: Drive north on Highway 135 from Gunnison three miles to the junction of Forest Road 730. Turn left (west) on 730 and travel approximately 24 miles to Kebler Pass. Turn right on to Kebler Pass and look for the left turn that leads to Irwin. (You'll see signs at the fork in the road.) Take the Irwin access road toward the one mile to the campground, lake and anglers parking.
