General Description

Magdalena Trail, 542, stems from Texas Creek Trail, 416, near the head of the Texas Creek Valley. It begins at approximately 10,980 feet and climbs to about 12,500 feet, in two miles, to the Magdalene Mine. The mine lies very close to the Continental Divide. When I saw it from across the valley, on Browns Pass, I thought, "What inspired men to dig into that rock?" The answer of course is money, the ultimate motivator.

A Lack of signs may make this trail difficult to follow. Remember that the trail follows a creek for the entire distance. The entire length of the Magdalena Trail is in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness.

Directions from Texas Creek Road: Hike five and a half miles east on the Texas Creek Trail, 416, to Magdalena Trail, 542.

Directions from Denny Creek Trailhead: Hike five miles north on Browns Pass Trail to Texas Creek Trail. Turn eastward on Texas Creek Trail and hike one mile to Magdalena Trail.

Browns Pass Trail #369 - Browns Pass Trail leads from the Texas Creek Valley to Cottonwood Pass Road. The trail is approximately six miles long, most of it lies within the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness.

Texas Creek - Deep pools and riffles support Rainbows, Browns, and Brook trout. The fishing is rated as good.

Texas Creek Road #755 - Texas Creek Road provides access to the western boundary of the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness Area. This part of the wilderness is not heavily used and a good place to seek solitude.

Texas Creek Trail - The trail enters the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness and forks lead to Waterloo Gulch, Magdalene Gulch, South Texas Creek and Browns Pass. The area is characterized by old mine workings and alpine scenery.

Waterloo Trail - Waterloo Gulch Trail leads north from Texas Creek, following a stream to the head of Waterloo Gulch and a small lake. This entire route lies within the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness.
