General Description

The road follows the Slate River for the first seven miles. Most passenger cars will have no problem on this lower section when the road is dry. The first landmark you'll reach on Slate Road is Nicholson Lake. This lake is privately owned so continue driving to reach public land. Immediately west of the lake is a fork in the road bear right to follow Slate River Road. This fork in the road is the winter trailhead for Slate River Road. Then you climb quickly for 1.5 miles to a junction. The right road will bring you to the Washington Gulch road #811. The left road will bring you to a pass which is the Gunnison National Forest boundary.

Directions from Crested Butte: Travel a half mile north on Gothic Road to Slate River Road.

Daisy Pass Trail - Daisy Pass trail heads southwest from Baxter Basin to Redwell Basin. The entire trail traverses through high, rugged terrain.

Emerald Lake - Emerald Lake is an alpine lake of twelve surface acres, that supports small rainbow trout. It is situated in a scenic valley with a picnic area on its northern shore.

Oh-Be-Joyful Creek - This beautiful small stream is six to eight feet in width, offering Brook trout. Beautiful scenic country. The fishing is rated as fair.

Oh-Be-Joyful Road #754 - This road provides access to Oh-Be-Joyful Creek and the Raggeds Wilderness.

Schofield Pass Road # 317 - The section of Schofield Pass north of Schofield Park is equally beautiful and treacherous. This road should only be attempted by experienced drivers in short wheel-based vehicles.
