General Description

Soap Creek feeds into Blue Mesa Reservoir from the West Elk Wilderness. An inlet of the Reservoir allows both Reservoir and creek fishing for rainbow, brook, cutthroat and brown trout. The fishing is rated as good by the Forest Service. Beaver dams frequent this ten foot wide stream. Willow is present along the banks. Soap Creek and Commissary campgrounds provide adequate public camping along the creek. A four-wheel drive vehicle is necessary to access the creek above the Commissary Campground.

Directions from Highway 92: Take Highway 92 across Blue Mesa Dam to Soap Creek Road #721 ( Well marked). Turn right on to 721. It follows the creek drainage.

Coal Mesa Trail - The trail climbs from Soap Creek to West Elk Creek. It follows a ridge for a distance with excellent views.

Commissary Campground - Anglers, four-wheel drive enthusiasts, hikers, equestrians and backpackers will enjoy the challenging terrain that surrounds Commissary Campground.

Soap Creek Trail - Soap Creek Trail leads north from Soap Creek Trailhead nine miles to a junction with Soap Basin Trail. Most of the tread parallels Soap Creek. It is contained within the West Elk Wilderness.

Soap Creek Campground - Soap Creek Campground caters to equestrians using the West Elk Wilderness Area.
