Taylor River Road

This is a very scenic drive and one that connects with several recreation facilities. The Taylor River Road passes camping, fishing, picnicking, rock climbing, rafting, kayaking, hiking and backpacking venues as it winds 20 miles northward to the reservoir dam. During the winter the road is open to Cottonwood Pass Road. The Fossil Ridge Wilderness area is open for backcountry skiing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The entrance to the canyon from Almont is a good place for wildlife viewing.

Directions from Gunnison: Drive nine miles North on Highway 135 to Forest Road 742 in Almont.

Directions from Buena Vista: Drive twenty five miles west on Cottonwood Pass Road and then five miles south on Taylor River Road.

Doctor Park Trailhead - The Doctor Park Trailhead lies in the same area as the North Bank Campground. It is used mainly by mountain bikers.

Lake View Campground - Visitors using Lake View Campground come to the area primarily for recreation in and around Taylor Park Reservoir. Boating, fishing, off-road vehicle use and hiking, top the list of activities.

Lodgepole Campground - This site is great for anglers, rafters and kayakers, because it is located on the shores of the Upper Taylor section of the Gunnison River.

Lottis Creek Campground - Lottis Creek Campground appeals primarily to anglers, hikers and four-wheel drive enthusiasts. The Taylor River basin provides access to challenging terrain for all ability levels.

North Bank Campground - North Bank Campground appeals primarily to anglers, because it lies on the lower Taylor River. Other recreation opportunities in the area include hiking, mountain biking, scenic driving and four-wheel driving.

One Mile Campground - This site lies at the south end of Taylor Canyon and provides access to a variety of activities including rock climbing and kayaking.

Spring Creek Road #744 - This road accesses Spring Creek. It starts at the Spring Creek Reservoir.

Summerville Trail - This trail begins in Taylor Canyon, one mile below Lodgepole Campground. After entering the Fossil Ridge Wilderness, the trail climbs out of Summerville Creek connecting with the Fossil Ridge Trail, 431.

Summerville Trailhead - Summerville Trailhead is accessible from Taylor Canyon on the Taylor River Road. It accesses the western portion of the Fossil Ridge Wilderness and Summerville Trail.
