General Description

Paradise Divide Road, Forest Road #519, begins at the end of Slate River Road at the top of a very steep ascent. This ascent climbs Paradise Divide and ends in Paradise Basin. This route crosses the basin and ends on Schofield Pass. It is a relatively smooth two and a half miles through the basin with a few shallow stream crossings. The scenery is breathtaking.

Directions from Crested Butte: Drive one mile north on Highway 135 to Slate River Road. Turn left on Slate River Road and travel nine miles to the beginning of Paradise Divide Road.

Directions from Gothic: Follow Gothic Road passed Emerald Lake to Scholfield Pass. Turn left on to Paradise Divide Road, Forest Road 519.

Emerald Lake - Emerald Lake is an alpine lake of twelve surface acres, that supports small rainbow trout. It is situated in a scenic valley with a picnic area on its northern shore.

Schofield Pass Road # 317 - The section of Schofield Pass north of Schofield Park is equally beautiful and treacherous. This road should only be attempted by experienced drivers in short wheel-based vehicles.

Slate River - This small river supports brook, brown and rainbow trout, but the fishing is rated as poor. Regardless, the surrounding terrain is beautifully rugged with many recreation opportunities.

Slate River Road #734 - This road follows Slate River and then continues to the White River National Forest.
