Coal Creek flows north into Anthracite Creek about one mile southeast of Paonia Reservoir.Coal Creek Road #709 is a narrow gravel road with few turnouts. This road provides excellent access to Coal Creek along the lower section of the creek. Due to the steepness of the terrain, it is difficult to get to the creek in many places. Coal Creek has fairly fast moving water with a few pools. There is good fishing for Rainbow and Brook trout along the lower end of the creek. Brook trout are principally in the upper reaches of the creek. Trail # 522 follows the upper end of Coal Creek for about three miles, then the trail turns west leaving Coal Creek. There are many beaver ponds in the upper reaches of Coal Creek which offer good fishing.
Directions from Kebler Pass Road: Travel Kebler Pass road to Coal Creek Road #709. Road #709 then follows Coal Creek for eight miles. Smith Fork Trail #522 then follows Coal Creek for another three miles.
