Smith Fork

One of the main attractions of Smith Fork and its tributaries is the variety of trout. Within Smith Fork and its branches, the fishermen can find Rainbow, Brook, Native Cutthroat and Brown trout. The main fisheries are Smith Fork, North Smith Fork and South Smith Fork.

Fishing on Smith Fork is limited to approximately three miles since the majority of the creek flows through private land. Brook and Rainbow trout up to twelve inches are the primary species in this creek.

The North Smith Fork is probably the better of the three for fishing. This creek offers the fisherman all four species of trout. The North Smith Fork has fast running water with many beaver ponds and deep pools, answering the needs of each individual species of trout. Access to this creek is by the Smith Fork Trail #522, and the Wapiti Trail # 521.

South Smith Fork is accessible by Trail # 522 and the Pieburn Trail # 524. The Pieburn Trail takes off from Road # 814, about three miles south of the Smith Fork Trailhead. This creek does not receive much use. Fishing should be good for Brook and Rainbow trout, with the possibility of catching some Native Cutthroat.

These creeks lie within the most beautiful and rugged terrain on the Paonia Ranger District. There are many steep and rocky mountain peaks, interesting rock outcroppings, along with large parks, and aspen and spruce-fir timber stands. A trip into this country will be long remembered.

Directions from Crawford: Travel east along Smith Fork Road #712 and Virginia Creek Road #814. For the higher length of creek travel, Forest Service Trail #522 and other Forest Service trails connecting to it.
