Windy Point Overlook provides a view of the mountain ranges to the west and north of Lake City
The Windy Point Overlook lies along Highway 149 about one mile west of Slumgullion Pass. This stretch of Highway 149 is part of the Silver Thread Scenic Byway, which leads from Lake City to Creede. The overlook allows a panoramic view of the Slumgullion slide and surrounding area.

The Slumgullion slide is the result of two ancient earth flows. A younger, shorter slide lies on top of an older, longer slide. The older slide moved down the valley and blocked the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River to form Lake San Cristobal.

The younger slide is visible from Windy Point Overlook. It is easily noticed because the trees are growing at different angles indicating the slide is still moving (approximately 20 feet per year). The older side is more stable and the trees in its path are fairly straight and the same approximate age.

Directions from Lake City: Drive south on Highway 149 toward Creede. Windy Point Overlook is approximately eight and a half miles south of Lake City.
