The easy part of the trail is the first four miles along the Stewart Creek. After that point you must bushwhack up out of the drainage and across a side ridge of San Luis Peak (14,014'). This route is unmarked but used by many as access to San Luis Peak so a topo map and orienteering skills are necessary. A faint route can be used to guide you to the Skyline Trail #465 and back down to Eddiesville. Bighorn sheep, mule deer, and elk are often seen along the trail.
Directions from Gunnison: Take Hwy 50 east to Hwy 114. Go through Cochetopa Canyon and then turn right on the access road to Dome Lakes and Old Agency Work Center, After about 4 miles turn right to go to the Old Agency Work Center and Forest Service Road #790 or go a few miles more and turn right just after Upper Dome Reservoir to get on Forest Service road #794. Take the Stewart Creek Road about 5 miles until you see the sign for the Stewart Creek Trail.
