This trail is the main access route for the Big Blue Wilderness. The Matterhorn Creek Trailhead provides the main access to Matterhorn Peak (13,590') and Wetterhorn Peak (14,015') and alternative access to Uncompahgre Peak (14,309').The area consists of high elevation alpine tundra and provides spectacular views of peaks over 13, 000'. The trail parallels the Ridge Stock Driveway which is used to move sheep up to the high country in early summer and down in the fall. Water is scarce so pack your water accordingly.
Directions from Lake City to Alpine Corrals: Go north toward Gunnison on Hwy 149 about 10 miles to the Alpine Forest Access Road. Take that road about 1.5 miles past the Alpine Plateau Road turnoff to the corrals (approx 6.5 miles from Hwy). The trail begins across Soldier Creek from the corrals.
Directions from Lake City to Matterhorn Creek: Take the Engineer Pass Road along Henson Creek about 10 miles to Capitol City. At Capitol City, turn right on the North Henson Road and continue about 2.5 miles to Matterhorn Creek.
