The headwaters of Cochetopa Creek lie within the La Garita Wilderness west of the Continental Divide in the La Garita Mountains. The fishing in this area is usually good to excellent for rainbow, brook and native trout.En route to this site users will cross many small tributaries to Cochetopa Creek. Most are good fisheries particularly in the beaver dammed sections. These streams are Pauline Creek, Perfecto Creek, Stewart Creek, Chavez Creek, Nutras Creek and Los Pinos Creek. Cochetopa Creek flows northward passed Dome Reservoir and through Cochetopa Canyon. Where State Road 114 meets Highway 50 Cochetopa Creek joins the waters of Tomichi Creek.
Directions from Gunnison: Take Highway 50 east to Highway 114. Go through Cochetopa Canyon and then turn right on Highway 114, which is marked as a National Forest Access Road. Travel about four miles, turn right to go to the Old Agency Ranger Station (BLM Route 3084) and Forest Service Road 790. An alternative to this route is to drive a few miles more and turn right immediately after Upper Dome Reservoir on Forest Service Road 794. Either road (790 or 794) will take you to the Stewart Creek Road, 794. Take the Stewart Creek Road about five miles until you see the sign for the Stewart Creek Trail at Eddiesville. Cochetopa Creek is the stream ahead.
