Milk Creek Road, Forest Road 578, stems from Marshall Pass Road, Forest Road 243, southeast of Sargents. This road follows the Milk Creek drainage four and a half miles to Sawmill Park. It continues leading southward in the Cochetopa Hills to Cameron Park. Turning westward the road leads two more miles on Sargents Mesa. It ends at Forest Road 860, which leads south to Highway 114. The middle portion of this road is extremely difficult. It is one of those roads that is easier to go down than up. It is not recommended for beginning drivers.
Directions from Highway 114: Take Highway 50 east eight miles to the Highway 114 junction and turn right towards Saguache. Go past mile post 51 about 100 yards and turn left onto a gravel county road. At .8 miles take the left fork and at 5.4 miles take the right fork. The road ends at 9 miles. Turn right and go through timberline to a large park ( Sargents Mesa ).
Directions from Marshall Pass Road: From Gunnison, take Highway 50 east to Sargents. Turn right on Marshall Pass Road, Forest Road 243, and travel approximately four miles to Milk Creek Road, Forest Road 578. Milk Creek Road parallels Marshall Pass Road for approximately one mile.
