Tomichi Pass Road, Forest Road 888, begins a few miles north of Sargents. It branches from Highway 50 and leads north to Snowblind Campground. Two miles north of the campground is the small cluster of summer cabins known as Whitepine. Up to this site the road may be referred to as Whitepine Road, but regardless of the name it is still Forest Service Road 888. The road follows Tomichi Creek and climbs steadily up the valley. Two and a quarter miles from Whitepine the road splits. Tomichi Pass Road follows the road to the left, Forest Road 888.1C leads to the right. Approximately one quarter mile passed this fork in the road lie the remains of the Tomichi townsite, the cemetery. The road becomes steeper and more narrow after this point. The road is tree lined for the next two miles as it begins to climb to Tomichi Pass. Approximately one half mile south of the pass the road emerges from the trees. At the pass summit there is a small area to pull off the road or turn around. The northern side of Tomichi Pass is significantly steeper and more dangerous than the southern approach. Often talus rock slides into the road bed and may need to be cleared in order to pass safely. (This section of the road should not be attempted if any snow exists on the road.) The first mile descending from Tomichi Pass is exposed and narrow. This is the most difficult section of the road. It ends after crossing Middle Quartz Creek. A quarter mile from the stream crossing Tomichi Pass Road intersects with Hancock Pass Road. Continuing westward, Tomichi Pass Road ends in one mile on the Alpine Tunnel Road, Forest Service Road 839.
Directions from Gunnison: Travel east on Highway 50 passed Sargents to Forest Road 888 (Whitepine Road and/or Tomichi Pass Road). Turn left and follow 888 ten and a half miles to the summit of Tomichi Pass.
