Wager Gulch-Carson Road leads south five miles from County Road 30 to the Continental Divide. The beginning elevation of this drive is approximately 9,370 feet. From this elevation the trail climbs 10,400 feet in the first mile. The road continues to steadily climb for the next two and a half miles remaining on the western shore of the stream that flows through Wager Gulch. At approximately 11,600 feet the trail reaches the Carson town site. This is an excellent example of the famed Colorado ghost town. Several buildings have weathered the harsh winter conditions of the region to remind visitors of the mining activity that brought settlers into the Colorado mountains. Carson is the destination for most folks who drive this road. Although the road does continue approximately two more miles to the Continental Divide. It ends at an approximate elevation of 12,400 feet.
Directions from Lake City: Take Highway 149 south for about two miles and turn right toward Lake San Cristobal on the Cinnamon Pass Road. Follow the Cinnamon Pass Road for about eight and a half miles to the sign indicating Wager Gulch. The road to Carson begins behind a metal gate.
