General Description

Attractions and Considerations: Park in the plowed areas. This is a long, fairly easy tour with a few short moderate slopes requiring some stamina. These trail descriptions for the Hinman Park Trail System, received from the Hahns Peak Ranger District, are difficult to follow. It is suggested that the skier travel with a good map and compass.

Narrative: From the parking area next to Seedhouse Road, follow the road leading southwest across the Elk River. Shortly after crossing, turn off the road to the southeast up a short incline, following the fence railing to the gate. Continue southeast across the open meadow, through a small grove of aspen onto an old forest road near the wilderness regulations sign. Head easterly on this road until you meet up with a trail junction approximately 1 mile from the parking area. The south fork will take you to the other four trails in the Hinman Park Trail System. Follow the east fork on the road until the road ends at the South Fork river crossing. Cut off the road to the east before the crossing, close to the tree line. Continue east until you come across a large open area to the south. Cut southeast across this open area, up the hill at the far end, and through a heavily timbered area. The trail curves around to the east and eventually works its way back to the South Fork of the Elk River. Crossing the river, the trail follows fairly closely to the river, which gradually curves around to the north. The trail then gradually climbs the side of the ridge, curving to the northwest, coming out in an open clear cut area. Across the clear cut area, the trail picks up an old closed road which goes to the North Lake Road. The trail follows the road west, down switchbacks to the Seedhouse Road. From there the trail follows the Seedhouse Road west, all the way back to the parking area.

Directions from Steamboat Springs: Travel west of town to County Road 129, Elk River Road. Go approximately 18 miles north, just beyond Clark, to Forest Road 400, Seedhouse Road. Head east approximately 5.5 miles to the Hinman parking area.
