General Description

Mix Lake Campground is one mile west of Platoro in the Conejos River drainage. This is a good access point for the South San Juan Wilderness.
Mix Lake, Platoro Reservoir, Conejos River, Lily Pond and Kerr Lake can all be accessed for fishing. Trial accesses include Lake Fork Trail 716 and Sawmill Gulch Trail. One can also visit the historic town of Platoro and the Mix Lake overlook is on-site. There is private land in the area, secure permission before entering.

The campground has 22 sites with tables and fireplaces. 3 vault type toilets, refuse receptacles and pickup, ample parking with convenient trailer spaces and drinking water are provided

Directions from Monte Vista, Colorado: Take Colorado Highway 17 south 12.0 miles. Take the Twelve Mile Road 12.0 miles west to the forest boundary where it becomes the Alamosa-Conejos River Road #250. Follow #250 17.0 miles up the Alamosa River and over Stunner Pass to Mix Lake.

Directions from Antonito, Colorado: Take Colorado Highway 17 west 23.0 miles to the Alamosa-Conejos River Road #250 at Elk Creek. Follow #250 23 miles up the Conejos River to Mix Lake.

Report: My husband and 7 yr old son come here every year and would recomend it to everyone. You're not far from town. The spot we had looked right down the valley and was beautiful in the mornings and evenings. The fishing was great at the lake.
Conditions: Our first day was spent driving around because of the afternoon shower. It hailed enough to make it look like it had snowed. It was wonderful the rest of the week.
Water Availability: We had a hose to hook up long enough to fill our water tank for showers and washing dishes. I do suggest that you bring your own drinking water though.

Report: me, my dad and my two brother-in-laws spent our first 'man trip' at mix lake in july of 1996. it was excellent! the weather was perfect, the fishing, (at both mix lake and platoro res. was good, the stars at night are unbelievable! it was just a great trip!

Adams Fork - The Adams Fork flows from headwaters below Summit Peak on the Continental Divide to join the Conejos River near Platoro Reservoir.

Adams Fork Trail - This trail is well suited for day hiking or overnight use. It is relatively easy and provides access to the South San Juan Wilderness.

Conejos River - The Conejos River provides more than 30 stream miles of high quality wild trout fishing. The Conejos River has more public fishing access along its length than any other major river in Colorado.

Conejos River Road - FR 250 Scenic Drive - Forest Road 250 is a graded dirt road that follows the Conejos River from Highway 17 to Platoro, crosses Stunner Pass, and then descends to the San Luis Valley along the Alamosa River.

Kerr Lake - The road is rough and steep in places and shouldn't be attempted without a 4 WD. 85% of the lake shore is rated is rated easy to fish.

Lake Fork Creek Trail - The trail is a gentle hike along the Lake Fork Creek to Big Lake. The trail then climbs steeply to a saddle between Forest King Mountain and Mammoth Mountain and drops steeply into the community of Platoro.

Lily Pond - Undeveloped campsites, 40% of shoreline is rated easy to fish.

Mix Lake - 90% of the shoreline is rated easy to fish. Due to its proximity to the Platoro and Mix Lake Campground, this lake is heavily fished. It is stocked regularly with rainbow trout.

Mix Lake Day Use Area - Heavily fished, stocked lake.

Platoro Reservoir - Platoro Reservoir lies a short distance west of the tourist-mining village Platoro. The lake is 990 acres, the highest man-made lake in North America.

Sawmill Gulch Trail (Conejos Peak Ranger District) - A pleasant day hike which offers spectacular views along the way. An excellent area for picnics and mountain scenery exists at the trail's end.

Summitville Documentary Site - Eleven thousand feet above sea level on headwaters of Wightman Fork at base of South Mountain (12,555 altitude) is the historical mining site of Summitville.

Upper Conejos River - Upper Conejos River is easily accessible and heavily fished, but remains excellent fishing.
