The North Fork South Zapata Creek Trail leaves the South Zapata Lake Trail approximately 2.25 miles from the South Zapata Lake Trailhead. This is a steep trail in very poor condition. This trail starts in dense forest and terminates above timberline with a limited number of campsites. A plane crash on December 15, 1965 killed three men at North Fork South Zapata Creek Lake. The scattered wreckage and a memorial to these men can still be seen at the lake. It is a steep trail with a limited number of campsites. Water is not available along this trail. A four-wheel drive vehicle or hiking should be used to reach the South Zapata Lake Trailhead.
Directions from U.S. Highway 160: From U.S. Highway 160, proceed north on State Highway 150 approximately 12 miles to a dirt road on the right. A four-wheel drive vehicle or a hike of 2.7 miles to the trailhead of South Zapata Lake Trail #852 is required. Proceed up South Zapata Lake Trail for 2.25 miles to the beginning of the North Fork South Zapata Creek Trail.
