At one time the trail went to Tobacco Lake, but a portion of the trail was destroyed during timber sale operations in the area. The trail now ends at Road #100. See the narrative on the following page for access to Tobacco Lake. The trail follows Lake Fork Creek, and the visitor will pass a series of pleasant cascades.The Tobacco Lake Trail leaves the Lake Fork Trail #716 just north of Big Lake. The trail follows Lake Fork Creek for approximately 2.0 miles and ends in a clearcut along side Forest Road #100. To continue on to Tobacco Lake, the visitor would have to hike up hill to Forest Road #105. Follow #105 to the east for 3/4 of a mile to a junction. Take the other road west one mile to the trail. The trail enters wilderness and the use of motorized vehicles in this area to Tobacco Lake is prohibited.
Directions from Antonito, Colorado: Go west on Highway 17 for 23.0 miles to the Conejos Canyon Road #250. Turn north for 17.0 miles to the Saddle Creek Road #105. Turn west to Lake Fork Ranch Road, approximately 0.5 mile. The start of the Lake Fork Trail #716 begins past the locked gate and goes north then west around the private property, then follows Lake Fork Creek to Big Lake, approximately 2.5 miles. Tobacco Lake Trail begins at Big Lake.
