General Description

The Upper Conejos River extends from its headwaters to the Pinnacles in the Conejos River Canyon. Forest 250 provides access from the Pinnacles to Platoro Reservoir. Forest Trail 712 and Forest Road 247 provide access from Platoro to the headwaters.

Camping restrictions are enforced on the Conejos River corridor. The only authorized camping locations on public land between the Pinnacles and Platoro Reservoir are Lake Fork and Mix Lake campground, and an undeveloped campsite at Trail Creek. The community of Platoro offers camping and lodging facilities.

Extensive fish habitat improvement work was completed on the river the summer of 1980 to improve this already excellent fishery. The Conejos River is easily accessible and heavily fished, but remains excellent fishing. Rainbow and brown trout are abundant.
