Silver Lakes Toll Road #260 is a maintained road but becomes very slick during wet periods.
Though this provides a short link between Alamosa and Platoro, due to road conditions, the time required to travel this route is the same as using Forest Road #250.This toll road was originally built and used as a supply road by miners. Crossing over Cornwall Mountain, it provided access to mining camps along the Conejos River Canyon and Platoro.
The road begins at the Alamosa River. The road begins to make a very gradual climb through spruce/fir and aspen stands and a number of meadows. Occasional views of Red Mountain are offered from the meadows. The Big Lake Trailhead is located .5 miles from the start of the road. The road reaches its highest elevation of 10,500 feet (3200 m) at Fisher Gulch, then begins its descent to the Conejos River.
Directions from Monte Vista, Colorado: Proceed south on the Gunbarrel Road, State Road #15, 12 miles to the Alamosa Canyon Road. 16 miles west on the Alamosa Canyon Road is the Silver Lakes Toll Road #260 turnoff.
