General Description

Cross Creek Campground is in the Beaver Creek drainage southwest of the town of South Fork. Fishing sites include Beaver Creek and Beaver Reservoir (1/4 mile north). Cross Creek Trail 512 has the biggest Douglas fir tree in the Rio Grande National Forest.

The facilities include 9 sites with tables and fireplaces (firewood is not provided), vault type toilet, trash cans, ample parking for cars, but turn around and parking space for trailers is limited.

Directions from South Fork, Colorado: Travel 1.0 mile west on U.S. Highway 160. Turn left on the Beaver Creek Forest Access Road #360 and go 9.0 miles south to Cross Creek Campground.

Normal Services Available: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend (NOTE: Campground alternates staying open after Labor Day until November 15, for Fall color viewing and big game hunting. Reduced Services. Campground may close earlier due to deep snow.) .

Report: The campground is located at the upper end of Beaver Creek Res. The road in from S.Fork is paved most of the way with good gravel after that. Motorhomes and trailers are not limited to size. The Lake is beautiful with good fishing for rainbow trout and Kokanee Salmon. We like to hit this lake after Labor Day and before elk season begins as there are no crowds and the temps are just right. It is in the 60's during the day and in the mid 20's at night. There is a small stream that splits the campground and it makes for good sleeping . South Fork has all the supplies you need and is about 5 miles from the lake. Try using small spinners and any color Berkley Floating Power Bait with a slip weight to hold it on the bottom.
Conditions: The campsites have shade but no running water.There are nice,clean restrooms in the campground and at the upper end of the lake. There are many nice campgrounds around South Fork and this is one of them! See you there in late Sept.

Related Activities

Beaver Creek Reservoir - All sizes of rainbow, brown, brook and native cutthroat trout as well as kokanee salmon tempt the fisherman. There is a paved boat ramp at the south end and the reservoir is suitable for rafts to small motor boats.

Cross Creek Trail - This trail is mostly used by campers and big game hunters. The end of the trail offers some beautiful views of Del Norte Peak, Willow Park and the surrounding area.

Largest Tree Cross-country Ski Trail - This short ski trail leads to the largest tree ever found on the Rio Grande National Forest. The huge Douglas-fir is over 66" (168 cm) in diameter, or 207" (526 cm) in circumference.

Ride Thru The Rockies Scenic Byway - Within the Divide District of the Rio Grande National Forest, winds a specially designed car tour. This lengthy course, composed of inspiring scenery and captivating wildlife, creates an excellent modem for viewing elk and deer.
