This had been a livestock trail, a way for stockmen to get their animal up to the high country. Now, livestock is driven on Alder Creek Road, leaving the trail open for hikers and horses. In the fall, hunters seek elk and deer on this trail.
Directions from South Fork: South Fork is 16 miles north of Del Norte on U.S. Highway 160. From South Fork, take highway 149 . Turn right on River Road (County Road 15) about 1 mile and turn left at Alder Creek Road (Forest Development Road 610). This will take you to Alder Guard Station.
