General Description

South Rock Creek Trail is lightly used and offers spectacular views from the top. Wildflowers, when in bloom, are prolific. The trail is rated as easy, with an occasional moderately difficult stretch. There are numerous stream crossings along the way. This trail begins at the end of Rock Creek Road and follows the south fork of rock Creek to its head. The trail terminates at the Dry Creek Stock Driveway, which furnishes access to other trails. The trail passes through areas of spruce-fir and open meadows, ending on a ridge top. Excellent vistas of the Rock Creek Drainage are seen along the way. Short side trips at the end of the trail offer scenic views in all directions.

Directions from Monte Vista: From Monte Vista, take Gunbarrel Road (Highway 15) south for 2 miles, turn west onto Rock Creek Road (County Road 2 South), and proceed 22 miles to the trailhead at the end of the road. Ample parking is available at the trailhead.

Related Activities

Comstock Campground - Comstock Campground is in the Rock Creek Drainage 18 miles southwest of Monte Vista. The South Fork of Rock Creek provides fishing. Big game hunting and hiking trails are accessible from here.

Dry Creek Trail - The trail starts in the low country and climbs steadily towards Bennett Mountain. The views are incredible and other trails and roads connect, which give enthusiasts many opportunities to make a loop trip.

Rock Creek Campground - Rock Creek Picnic Area is nearby. One can fish on North Fork Rock Creek and South Fork Rock Creek and hike on Alamosa-Rock Creek Trail 703, North Fork Rock Creek Trail 704 and South Fork Rock Creek Trail 702.

Silver Mountain Trail - The trail passes through stands of every type of tree found on the Conejos Peak District. Beautiful vistas can be seen from the trail as it passes by Silver Mountain.

West Frisco Trail - West Frisco Trail goes all the way to Bennett Mountain, which is 13,203 in elevation. Spectacular views and a diversity of scenery abound on this trail.
