This area offers some excellent opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. An 8-mile segment of the Lake City to Creede Cross-Country Ski/Snowmobile Trail bisects a portion of this area. Other unmarked roads offering ski-touring possibilities are described below.Excellent ski-touring/cross-country skiing is available in this area. Access is via the Jarosa Mesa Primitive (4 WD) Road that begins at Spring Creek Pass on Colorado Highway 149 approximately 34.5 miles northwest of Creede. In the winter months this road makes up a part of the Lake City snowmobile trail system. Therefore, the 6 1/2-7 mile trip along this road into the Big Buck Basin will be along a groomed snowmobile trail. Skiers should remember, however, that regress back out of Big Buck Basin will be an uphill climb back up to the Jarosa Mesa Primitive Road and snowmobile trail. This area lends itself best to those skiers who are also snowmobilers who can make the 13-14 mile round trip into and back out of the basin by snowmobile on the groomed snowmobile trail, thus conserving time and energy to devote to skiing Big Buck Basin. Remember, its still a long way back out to Spring Creek Pass. Adequate parking is found at Spring Creek Pass.
