From the parking area, turn right and go up past Forest Road 890 until you reach Superior Mill (2.0 miles). Then bear left onto Forest Road 869 and follow it uphill until you reach the Rio Grande National Forest boundary. Turn left and follow the trail down until you cross a creek. Turn left and follow the creek downhill to Mosquito Lake. There, the trail turns into a logging road, which you can follow to Forest Road 862. Take Forest Road 862 downhill to the parking area. The trail is rocky until you reach Superior Mill, which is on your right (2.0 miles). You will be on mine tailings for about 1/2 mile in front of the mine. About a mile later the trail cuts through an old timber cut area and then follows the divide between the two National Forests down to Mosquito Lake. The trail to the lake is very rough and difficult to discern at times. The singletrack section past the creek is hard to follow, but the view of the lake is worthwhile. The climb from the lake back up to Forest Road 862 is a steep logging road, but the descent back to the parking area from there is fun, with its forest setting and switchback trail. Sections of the trail are difficult to find, so follow directions, maps and signs carefully. For those on mountain bikes, some sections are single track hiking trails, so the tread is not very flat or wide and tends to be rough. Stream crossings are not difficult, but other obstacles to watch for are fallen trees and large rocks.
Directions from Saguache, Colorado: Take U.S. Highway 285 19.0 miles north to Villa Grove. Turn left onto County Road LL 36 and follow for another 14.0 miles to Bonanza. Continue about 2.0 miles to the junction of Forest Development Road # 890 and Forest Road # 862. There will be a designated parking area that can access Kerber Creek Trail, Mosquito Lake Trail, and Round Mountain Trail.
