General Description

This relatively easy trail begins west of Ward, on the Brainard Lake Road. The road is generally well covered until you approach the reservoir where severe winds off of Niwot Ridge may scour it clear of snow.

Travel south from the parking area on the Lefthand Park Reservoir Road. The road may be windblown and icy in patches. Follow the winding roadbed uphill, passing a cutoff to the right (north) which leads to the Walthrop South Loop. After climbing a hill past the bridge, fork to the right (south). The next mile is nearly level. the last 0.2 mile of roadbed may be windblown. About 1.8 miles in, a fork to the right (west) leads down into the shelter of trees and follows a creek to the reservoir. The return trip from the Reservoir is 2 miles to the parking area.

Directions from Nederland: Follow Colorado Highway 72 north to Ward. Take the Brainard Lake Road County Road #102 west 2.6 miles to the closure and park facing downhill at the bulletin board. The road may drift so be prepared.
