General Description

This route follows a road which forks shortly after entering the woods. Either fork takes you to coney Flats. Both are relatively gentle in pitch, rolling gradually up and down to the wilderness. Strong winds should be anticipated at Coney Flats since it is a "bench" relatively clear of trees. Mt. Audubon, Paiute, Sawtooth, Buchanan Pass, and St. Varian Mountain form an impressive landscape from left to right.

The trip described here is only one of 3 or 4 available via this access. From Coney Flats one can turn north (right) and ski down to the Middle St. Varian road, then turn east (right) and ski to Camp Dick. Turn right again and ski up the ridge to the south for 1 miles to the Buchanan Pass Trail, only 50 yards from Beaver Reservoir and the road back to your vehicle. This route is 10.5 miles. Only strong skiers should attempt it.

Directions from Ward: Travel 2.5 miles north. Turn west on the Beaver Reservoir road. Snow tires or chains are advised. Bear right at the turnoff for Camp Tahosa. Drive as far as road conditions permit (usually about 1.3 miles). Park as far off the road as possible.
