General Description

This trail cuts deep into the wilderness, offering an excellent high mountain winter experience. Snow conditions are generally good, the principal antagonist being wind. As a consequence, good physical conditioning and equipment are very important.

Be alert to avalanche hazards, especially above Blue Lake and Lake Isabelle. Be prepared for sudden, adverse weather changes in this area.

Ski west on the Walthrop North Trail for 2.6 miles. At the intersection with Mitchell Lake Road, turn right (northwest) to reach Mitchell Lake Trailhead parking. Ski 1 mile west on Mitchell Lake Trail or up Mitchell Creek from the bridge to Mitchell Lake. At this point, advanced skiers may wish to ski 1 mile farther west to Blue Lake by following the creek at the northwest end of Mitchell to this timberline lake. To return, ski north of the creek bed route maintaining elevation on the Mt. Audubon side or down to Mitchell. The return trip from Mitchell Lake is about 4 miles. At the Brainard Lake Road, return following the Walthrop South Loop, or if snow conditions are favorable, use the Brainard Lake Road.

Directions from Ward: Take Brainard Lake Road 2.8 miles to the winter gate closure. Park as far off the road as possible.
