General Description

Columbine Campground is located 2 miles west of Central City on Colorado Highway 279, at an elevation of 9,200 feet. Highway 279 is a gravel road. Campground facilities include drinking water, tables, fire rings and pit toilets and trash service.

Directions from Central City: 2.5 miles Northwest of Central City via Gilpin County Road 3 on Forest Road 176. To access turn left off of Hwy. 119 and go through Central City on Hwy. 279. At the top near the cemeteries,follow the signs to the campground.

I am a colorado native but will now take my money to other states as there is no first come first served. Take the pay box and envelopes away as if you get a spot and get set up, you may have to pack up. If you don't mind a lot of noisy engines all day long then this is for you. Otherwise forget it. The amazing thing is even though it is not supposed to be allowed to joyride through the campground, many off-roaders seemed to think riding round and round in camp was perfectly ok. And the camp host even joined in and partied with them at night. Late at night. Conditions: Camprground was in very good condition and very clean. Mostly shady and level. Water Availability: Water in camp and pit toilets available. Filed By: M. It is well "off of the beaten path" providing a very quiet atmosphere. It can be reached going past the old Central City graveyards. The campground is divided into two primary loops. Usually the busier loop is loaded with most of the reservation campers. Is nice for children, and firewood can be plentiful at short distances from the campsite. Conditions: Weather conditions can vary greatly in short periods. The gravel roads can be very muddy when wet, but will dry up quickly in the sun. There is plenty of sun and shade here. Be prepared for bumpy and soft tent areas. Hiking around the campgrounds, you will encounter steep and hilly areas. Water Availability: We had plenty of water during the normal season. It was pumped from several spigots on the campground--- clean and drinkable.
