General Description

This trail leads up Stevens Gulch south of Bakersville and just east of the Continental Divide. The trailhead is marked with a sign pointing to Stevens Gulch and Grizzly Gulch. The trail follows the road up from Bakersville then splits to the left at about one mile. (Grizzly Gulch is to the right) Following the road to the left, the trail continues its steady climb. At the 2.5 mile point, the trail skirts safely around the bottom of a large avalanche chute on Kelso Mountain. Continuing on, the trail reaches timberline at the 4.0 mile point. There are a few old summer cabins in this area and Stevens Mine is visible to the left. The scenery is spectacular on a sunny day with Grays and Torrey's Peaks and Mt. Edwards forming a basin at the end of the trail. Take the weather into account when deciding how far above timberline to travel. Above timberline, the willows provide important habitat for the white-tailed ptarmigan wintering in the area. Please avoid willow clumps by staying on the trail.

Directions from Idaho Springs: Travel west on I-70 to the Bakerville exit, #221. Head south from the highway to the parking area. The trailheads south out of the parking lot.
