General Description

Sugarloaf Campground is located approximately 38 miles southwest of Granby in the Williams Fork area. The campground sits 25 miles south of Highway 40 up the Williams Fork River, at an elevation of 8,940 feet. Sugarloaf is located less than one mile beyond South Fork Campground. Sugarloaf sits adjacent to the Williams Fork River. The wheelchair accessible Williams Fork Boardwalk Trail begins at the campground.

Facilities:

There are 11 campsites. Facilities include vault toilets, picnic tables, fire grates and drinking water.

Directions from Granby: Travel west on Highway 40 approximately 14 miles to County Road 3/Forest Road 139. Travel south on Road 3/139 approximately 17 miles, passing Williams Fork Reservoir, to Forest Road 138. Go south on 138 approximately 9 miles to the campground.

To prevent spamming, you must be a registered user of Wildernet in order to submit a trip report Number of People Encountered: 0-10 ppl Recommend to a Friend: Neutral Report: Huge amounts of pine beetle kill, leaving all of the surrounding hillsides and campground decimated. Small aspens and various undergrowth are starting to replace the pines. Once very popular campground is deserted. We did see four moose - two males, one female, and a very young moose. Having said all of this - we did very much enjoy ourselves and would probably return. Conditions: Mosquitoes were there, but not bad. Some biting flies. Even with a lot of rain the previous week, campsites drained nicely. Dead pine trees in campground have been cut down and removed for the most part. Loss of trees had to be 90% or more. Campground tables are not well maintained, although campground itself was maintained, including the outhouse. Southfork boardwalk trail over the wetlands is not maintained anymore, has collapsed half way across and the collapsed section has been removed. Firewood is plentiful! Water Availability: Water well was turned off, however the hand pump water well at the campsite a mile down the road was operating.

Darling Creek Trail - The Darling Creek Trail is located south of Granby in the Williams Fork area. It leads from the Williams Fork River near the Sugarloaf Campground to the St. Louis Peak-Jones Pass Trail.

Ute Peak Trail - The Ute Peak Trail, #24, is located southwest of Granby in the Williams Fork area. The trail leads from the Williams Fork River up along Williams Fork Ridge to Ptarmigan Pass.
