General Description

Arapaho Bay Campground, Roaring Fork Loop

Arapaho Bay Campground is divided into three loops, Big Rock, Moraine and Roaring Fork. It is located on the southeast end of Lake Granby in the Arapaho National Recreation Area. It is near Monarch Lake and the Indian Peaks Wilderness. This campground offers beautiful scenery off the main roads.

Facilities:
There are 84 campsites. Facilities include vault toilets, fire grates, picnic tables, drinking water and a boat launching ramp. Doubles sites are available and can accommodate 10 people.

Directions from Granby: Travel west on Highway 40 approximately 2 miles to Highway 34. Travel east on Highway 34 approximately 8 miles to Forest Road 125 (County Road 6). Travel east on Forest Road 125 approximately 8 miles to the site.

This well marked 8.5 mile round trip hike took us 5 hours, and is very steep in spots. It is rated moderate to difficult. Lots of flowers, mushrooms, and did not see any people. About 5 stream crossings. The lake has cutthroat trout. If you go it would be a good idea to take about 2 quarts of water per person, mosquito repellent, food, trekking poles and your camera! Conditions: It was a little muddy in spots and we had to walk through some of the streams; watch out for the slippery rocks. We saw bear and elk skat! The hike is mostly shaded with lots of rocks and a few fallen trees. Difficulty: Number of People Encountered: 25-50 ppl Recommend to a Friend: Highly Report: very nice wooded campsites. because of the draught, the lake is no where near the CG. very peaceful. groundsquirrels very friendly!! one mile from beautiful Monarch lake.

Arapaho Pass Trail (west side) - The Arapaho Pass Trail, #6, is located east of Granby. It leads from Monarch Lake, up Arapaho Creek and over Arapaho Pass.

High Lonesome Trail - The High Lonesome Trail is located northeast of Fraser. It leads from the Monarch Lake area to Devils Thumb Pass. It can be accessed at various points.

Knight Ridge Trail - The Knight Ridge Trail is located to the northeast of Granby. It leads from the Arapaho Bay Campground, along the northeast side of Lake Granby and Shadow Mountain Lake to Grand Lake Village.

Lake Granby - 7,256 acre Lake Granby is one of Colorado's largest man-made reservoirs. It is located in the Arapaho National Recreation Area, at an elevation of 8,280 feet.

Monarch Lake - Monarch Lake is a 150 acre lake located east of Granby in the Arapaho National Recreation Area, at an elevation of 8,350 feet.

Roaring Fork Trail - The Roaring Fork Trail is located northeast of Granby, on the east side of Lake Granby. It leads up to either Watanga Lake or Stone Lake.
