General Description

Pine Creek Trailhead provides access to Collegiate Peaks Wilderness, Colorado Trail (1776), Pine Creek Trails (1467), South Pine Creek Trail (1458), Frenchman Creek Trail (1457) and Missouri Gulch Trail (1469). The hiking trails accessed by this trailhead exist in high elevations; the lowest being 9,100'. Various mining sites dot the landscape visible from these trail, reminding users of the industrial economy that initially brought settlers to the area.

Directions from Leadville: Drive 21 miles south of Leadville on Highway 24. Turn west on to Forest Road 123. Travel approximately 2 miles on this gravel road to the trailhead. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for travel on this road.

Directions from Buena Vista: Drive 12 miles north of Buena Vista on Highway 24. Turn west on to Forest Road 123. Travel approximately 2 miles on this gravel road to the trailhead. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for travel on this road.

Normally Accessible: May through September (NOTE: Snow may obstruct the trail at high elevations.) .

Frenchman Creek Trail - Frenchman Creek Trail begins at the Collegiate Peak Wilderness boundary, where Frenchman Creek Road ends. It extends 3.5 miles into the wilderness area reaching an elevation of 12,300'.

Missouri Gulch Trail - This area is extremely popular with climbers with access to Mt. Belford, Mt. Oxford and Missouri Mountain. To experience solitude, plan your trip for a week day.
