Hiking the South Fork Clear Creek Trail
|
This is an easy family hike. The well-maintained trail starts at the trailhead gate closure. It is easy to follow as it gently climbs through both forest and open meadows with magnificent views of the Three Apostles. Columbine wildflowers are common along the trail in summer. The trail ends before it crosses the stream on the south side of the old mining camp of Hamilton where it divides into the signed Apostle Basin and Lake Ann Trails. A cabin foundation visible across the creek is all that remains of Hamilton. This trail description courtesy of John Cys.
Directions from US Hwy 24: From U.S. Hwy 24 2 miles south of Granite or 15 miles north of Buena Vista turn west on Chaffee County Road 390 which is the Clear Creek road. Follow this gravel road 12 miles to the ghost town of Winfield. Turn left across the bridge and follow the high clearance South Clear Creek jeep road for 2 miles to the gate closure at the South Clear Creek trailhead. There is ample parking.
