The Tennessee Pass General Forest Area is known as a training site for the Tenth Mountain Division. This military troop based at Camp Hale near Tennessee Pass, served in Italy in World War II. The Tenth Mountain Division was trained in the necessities of mountain and winter warfare. They were a volatile part of the war efforts, since few Americans elicited mountaineering skills in the 1940's. The Tenth is commemorated with a war memorial on Tennessee Pass at the entrance to Ski Cooper, as are men of the Ninety-ninth Infantry Battalion who were also stationed at Camp Hale.The purpose of the new camp was to train the recently organized
Directions from Leadville: Drive approximately 9.75 miles north of Leadville on Highway 24. When you reach the Tenth Mountain Division Memorial and the entrance to Ski Cooper, you've reached the summit of Tennessee Pass.

May through October
(NOTE: At 10,000 feet, the weather can vary tremendously. Summer temperatures range from 30 degrees at night to an occasional 80 degree day. The average daytime temperature is 65 degrees. Weather can change quickly, a hot day can turn to a drenching downpour)

ColoradoTrail (Tennessee Pass to Turquoise Lake) - This segment of the Colorado Trail leads users through lodgepole, spruce-fir and aspen forests. It consists of moderately difficult terrain.
Mitchell Creek Loop - Mitchell Creek Loop is approximately 7.3 miles long with varying degrees of difficulty. Users can gain access to this trail from Highway 24 about 9 miles northwest of Leadville.
Powderhound Loop - The Powderhound Loop is located on the summit of Tennessee Pass. The trail is 2.5 miles long and reaches an elevation of 10,680'.
Treeline Loop - This trail leads skiers in a 2.3 mile loop that begins from Ski Cooper. The trail access the Continental Divide.
West Tennessee Lakes Trail - The West Tennessee Lakes Trail begins where the Lily Lake Road (FDR 131) ends. Trail leads to three lakes where the fishing is good.
