General Description

Mt. Huron may be reached by hikers from Clear Creek Road.

This trail begins along the South Fork of Clear Creek Road approximately 2.5 miles from Winfield and past the old Banker Mine. Hike south of the metal gate approximately 150 yards to a small meadow. Look for a sign for Huron, directing you to the east. Follow this trail as it goes up the first small hill and makes a turn to the right. You will then continue south until it reaches a small creek. Climb east up the very steep trail to tree line and a large grassy bench. The trail tread is intermittent and often just marked with cairns. Please do your best to follow the marked route as rare plants have a tenuous existence in this area. Continue up and across the bench to the prominent saddle on the ridge between Browns Peak and Huron peak. Hike south along he ridge to Huron's summit. Avoid the urge to contour below Huron's summit into the large scree and talus filled bowl. Multiple trails, all heavily eroded, are the cause of significant resource damage found in this section. Remain on the ridge for the descent and regain the trail for the return trip. Please pay close attention to any signs posted at the trailhead, which will provide the latest information on this route.

Directions from Leadville: From Leadville travel south on U.S. Highway 24 to Granite. Continue driving 1 1/2 miles to Clear Creek road (Forest Road 390) in Chaffee County. Travel west 12 miles to Winfield then approximately 1/2 mile south on forest Road 390 (south fork) to the parking area.

Clear Creek Road - Clear Creek Road is passable by most two-wheel drive vehicles. Many recreation opportunities are accessible from this road including hiking, fishing, viewing scenery, touring historic sites, mountain biking and four-wheel driving.

South Fork Clear Creek Four-Wheel Drive Road - The South Fork of Clear Creek Road begins at Winfield and ends at the road closure just south of the Banker Mine. The road is extremely rough and recommended for high clearance vehicles only.

South Fork Clear Creek Trail - This easy family hike gently climbs through both forest and open meadows with magnificent views of the Three Apostles.

Vicksburg Historic Site - Vicksburg became a mining camp during the last decades of the Nineteenth Century. It's prosperity didn't last long and most of the residents moved from the area for more profitable mining.

Winfield Historic Site - Once a thriving silver and copper mining town, Winfield now claims it's fame as a Colorado ghost town. The schoolhouse, cemetery and church have been restored by volunteers.
