The Highline Trail provides a half-day of moderate hiking. The elevation gain is 1,360 feet. You could also continue south on the Colorado Trail in the Mt. Massive Wilderness. The Colorado Trail crosses the Mt. Massive Trail (1487) within two miles. Continue hiking and you'll reach the Halfmoon Drainage in 4.5 miles. It is also possible to continue west along the Highline trail for 2.5 miles to Native Lake.
Directions from Leadville: Drive approximately 3 miles southwest of Leadville to State Highway 300. The trailhead is within the boundaries of the Leadville National Fish Hatchery. Follow signs to the fish hatchery turning right on to Highway 300. You will find the trailhead approximately 2.5 miles after leaving Highway 24. Look for it on the left side of the road.
