The section of the road which can be driven with a four-wheel drive begins 4.5 miles north of Leadville on Colorado 91 and ends on Buckeye Trail about 1/4 mile before the lake. It's a moderate to difficult road with some rough, rocky spots. Buckeye Gulch Road follows the stream through dense, lush willows and shrubs. The first part of this road crosses private land. Please stay on the roadway and be respectful of private property.
Directions from Leadville: Drive north on Highway 91 from Leadville. Approximately 4 1/2 miles from town turn left on to Buckeye Gulch Road.
