Mt. Princeton Campground
|
Mt. Princeton Campground is partially wooded with Ponderosa pine, aspen and cedar trees. The campground has 17 sites. Sites 1-8 are creek side; sites 7 and 16 are narrow (11 feet wide); sites 6-8, 10,11 and 14 are rocky. There is room in select site for trailers up to 38' and medium size RVs.The Chalk Cliffs, Mt. Princeton and Mt. Antero (both 14'ers) are located in or near this drainage. The historic town of St. Elmo is located at the end of County Road 162. Other remnants of the mining economy lie within the valleys and mountains of the local terrain. The Alpine Tunnel is located on County Road 295, south of St. Elmo, and accessible by trail. Fishing in Chalk Creek and Chalk Lake and various alpine lakes in the area are accessible by foot or four-wheel drive. Hiking trails in the area include the Agnes Vaille Falls Trail, Colorado Trail, Poplar Gulch Trail, Mt. Princeton Trail and Mt. Antero Trail. Several four-wheel drive roads area accessible from this drainage. They include Tincup Pass, Hancock Pass, Baldwin Gulch and Mt. Antero.
Directions from Nathrop: Drive west 7 miles on County Road 162 to the campground.
Directions from Buena Vista: Travel 15 miles south on Highway 285. Turn right on to County Road 162 for 7 miles to the campground.
Directions from Jct Rte 285 & Rte 162: Take Rte 162 for 8.3 mi. Left onto Rte 162A.
