General Description

Alvarado Campground is located approximately 10 miles southwest of Westcliffe on Highway 69. Go south of Westcliffe to County Road 140 and follow it for about 7 miles to the campground.

There are 47 individual family campsites and two trailheads here. Each campsite includes a table, fire ring and parking spur. Drinking water comes through a piped water system with hydrants scattered throughout the campground. There are six double vault toilets; all roads and spurs are aggregate surfaced. The site for the campground manager has electrical and water hookups. Trash is collected with contractor-furnished dumpsters. The facilities in this campground are in fair to good condition. Alvarado has a use rate of 47% during the normal operating season.

Nearby attractions include access into the Sangre de Cristo "Wilderness, stream and alpine lake fishing, hiking, motorized trail riding, horseback riding and mountain bike riding

Directions from Westcliffe: Drive 3.5 miles south of Westcliffe to County Road 140, turn right and go another 4.5 miles. Turn left on County Road 141 and go 2 miles to the campground.

Renovations have been completed and the campground is open. Approximately 1/4 filled. Nice, quaint restaurant next to the campground. A little pricey but the food is good. Enjoyed eating there the last night of camping. No pots, pans, or dishes to clean-up, just go enjoy a campfire after dinner. Next to the restaurant are 5 cabins available for rental. Very reasonable rates ($75 a night). Cabins are rustic but clean. They have kitchenettes complete with refrigerator, stove, sink, dining table. Two separate bedrooms, ours had queen beds in each room, but they took up almost the entire room. I would stay at them again. Conditions: Campground was clean and dry. Many sites to choose from, some shaded, some very open. Many of the renovated campsites have been designed to accommodate tent and/or trailer camping. New outdoor tables, fire rings, lantern hangers installed. Very nicely done. Water Availability: Drinking water is available from spigots around the campground. Camp sites were very nice and secluded from each other. There was a small stream running throught the camp site, with water in it, even in this drought. My legs are sore from all the hiking. Conditions: Weather was perfect and the sites were very shady. Bring an hammock! Water Availability: Drinking water was available.
