Purgatoire Campground is located on Forest Development Road 34 approximately 4 miles west of its intersection with State Highway 12. Forest Road 34 is approximately 34 miles from the town of La Veta, CO. It is located at 9,700 feet above sea level. This campground consists of 23 single family units, each unit has a table, fire ring with grill and parking spur. Sanitation is provided for by three double-unit vault toilets. Drinking water is provided by one well with hand pump. Trash collection is by 5 bear-proofed 30-gal. cans. The loop roads and parking spurs are aggregate surfaced. All facilities are in poor to fair condition. The Northfork Trailhead is located within the boundary of the campground. Purgatoire has an average use rate of 35% during the normal operating season. Attractions include fishing at nearby North and Monument Lakes and stream fishing in the Purgatoire, hiking, and horseback riding.
Directions from Jct Rte 160 & I-25 in Walsenberg: Take Rte 160 west for 13.5 mi., make left on Rte 12 south and go for 30 mi. Pass Cuchara Ski Area, make a right on FDR 34.5 at North Lake Rec. Area. Go right at fork in road 4.1 mi. to CG.
