Vogel Canyon lies 15 miles south of La Junta, Colorado, and contains two springs that contribute to the Purgatoire River. Many types of wildlife, including many species of birds, can be viewed in the area surrounding these springs. Especially good times for visitors to view wildlife are at sunrise and sunset. Other attractions to this picnic area include four hiking trails, ancient rock art, the Santa Fe Trail and interesting geological features.Three covered picnic tables with grills, one vault toilet, two hitching rails, horse trailer parking and hiking trails are available at the site. Camping is allowed in the parking area, but not along any of the hiking trails. Drinking water is not provided.
Directions from La Junta: Drive south on Highway 109 for 13 miles to County Road 802. Turn right (west) on to 802 and travel one mile to a sign for Vogel Canyon. Turn left (south) and drive two miles to the picnic area.

Canyon Trail - This trail leads 1.75 miles through Vogel Canyon and connects with the Prairie and Mesa Trails.
Mesa Trail - This trail leads 2.25 miles west connecting the Canyon Trail to the Prairie Trail at Vogel Canyon Picnic Area.
Overlook Trail - This trail leads one mile roundtrip to an overlook of Vogel Canyon and is wheelchair accessible.
Prairie Trail - The Prairie Trail begins a short distance north of Vogel Canyon Picnic Area on the Barlow & Sanderson Stage Road.
