Iron Spring was used as a source of water for travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. Depending on the season or weather conditions, several different routes to the spring were used. Between 1861 and 1871 Iron Spring was also used as a stage coach station. Trail ruts from wagons and stages are still visible west of the parking lot.This site is now a stop on the Santa Fe National Historic Trail. RV and bus parking is provided on site. No drinking water is available.
Directions from La Junta: Drive southwest on Highway 350 for 27 miles to County Road 9. Turn left (south) on to 9 and drive one mile to the parking lot.
Directions from Trinidad: Drive northeast on Highway 350 for 42 miles to County Road 9. Turn right on to 9 and drive one mile. Turn right into the parking lot.
