Crags Campground is located on the western slope of Pikes Peak
|
The Crags campground is located southeast of Divide and can be reached by driving 4.3 miles south of Divide on Colorado Highway 67 and then 3.5 miles east on Forest Road 383. This campground has 17 camp sites for tents or small trailers. The elevation is 10,100 feet. The camping season begins around Memorial Day and continues into September. The weather is generally mild with warm days and cool nights. Summertime highs are around 70-80 degrees with the nighttime lows around 35-45 degrees. Afternoon thunderstorms are a common occurrence. The spring and fall weather is usually dry and sunny with highs around 60 degrees and the lows around 20-30 degrees. The site is heavily used from mid-May to mid-September. The Crags Campground is in an "out-of-the-way" area that can receive a lot of use. Depending upon the time of day and year various forms of wildlife may be observed. Hiking is the primary recreation activity to enjoy in this area. A forest trail, The Crags Trail, 664, goes to the Crags outcropping; hiking trails are also available at Mueller State Park located just west of Highway 67. This campground has been identified as a bear problem area. Please follow standard procedures while in bear country. History buffs will enjoy this area as historic Cripple Creek and Victor are about 15 miles south of the road junction with Forest Road 383. There one may find historic buildings, mines, shops and casinos to visit. Winter activities include X-country skiing. The facilities available at Crags Campground include tables, fire grates, drinking water and vault-type toilets. Trash collection is provided in bear-proof receptacles. The low-level of maintenance on the access road to the campground makes it difficult for large trailers to navigate. Please drive with caution. The road may become inaccessible in the winter. Because of heavy summertime use by hikers, parking may be hard to find. Use of this site is heavy during spring and fall, extra-heavy during summer and light during winter.
Directions from Colorado Springs: Drive 18 miles west on Highway 24 to Woodland Park. Continue traveling west on Highway 24 7 miles to Divide. In Divide turn south on to Highway 67 and travel 4 miles to Forest Road 383. Then drive 3 miles to The Crags Campground.
