Report: 3/6/00: I went to hike Severy Creek Trail with a friend, and we were told at the Toll Booth that the trail has been closed by the Federal Government. There is now a steel gate blocking access to the road that leads to the trail, and numerous signs with trespassing warnings. Hopefully it will be re-opened soon.

Report: I hiked the Severy Creek Trail in the beginning of August '99. Being from Illinois, hiking in the mountains was a little hard for me. I hiked alone, and it was the most beautiful hike I have ever taken. I started at Crow Gulch and hiked up to just above Glen Cove (12,000ft) via the Elk Park Trail. It took about 6 hours. I saw only one person camping and one person hiking. I figure the total distance was about 6-7 miles. I had originally planned to visit the abandoned mining camp, but upon reaching the trail that led to it, I decided I was too tired. In my opinion, the best part of this trail starts just south of the intersection with Elk Park Trail, and then heading north, there were terrific views of pine forested valleys and a little hiking above treeline at the very end. I was out of breath nearly the whole trail, but it was well worth it. If I ever do it again, I think I'll start at Glen Cove and hike down. I have pictures if anyone is interested. nighthike@yahoo.com
