General Description

Barr Camp is a year-round mountain base camp located along the Barr Trail on the east face of Pike's Peak, at an elevation of 10,200 feet. It is operated under a special use permit with the U.S. Forest Service. Barr Camp is an historic landmark. The camp was built between 1921 and 1924 by Fred Barr, the same man who built the Barr Trail.

Barr Camp provides safety information, a refuge, and a mountain base camp to over 20,000 hikers, campers, runners, and mountain bikers per year. The main cabin houses caretakers year-round. Staff instructs and advises visitors regarding the viability of continuing their ascent up the peak.

A main cabin, an upper cabin and lean-to-shelters are available for accommodations. Tent campsites are also available. The main cabin is bunkhouse style and sleeps up to 15. The upper cabin is rented as a whole private unit and sleeps up to 10. The lean-to-shelters each sleep 2-4 people. A charge is made for use of these facilities. Propane cook stoves, cooking and eating utensils, mattresses, filtered drinking water, a horseshoe pit, picnic tables, badminton and volleyball are available. Meals can be provided on weekends. Guests must provide all of their own personal equipment, including bedding or a sleeping bag. Tent sites are available free-of-charge.

Directions from Higway 24 and Interstate 25: Drive west on Highway 24 and take the first exit for Manitou Springs. Turn right at the bottom of the ramp, and drive into Manitou Springs. Once in town look for the "Cog Railway" sign, and turn left onto Ruxton Avenue. Follow Ruxton to it's end at the Cog Railway Depot. Hikers should continue past the railway and follow the "Barr Trail Parking" sign to the gravel parking lot. Barr Camp is a 6.8 mile non-technical hike up Barr Trail. The total trail distance to the summit of Pikes Peak is 12.6 miles.

Barr Trail - The Barr Trailhead in Manitou serves the Pikes Peak summit trail as well an entire network of trails on Pikes Peak. The elevation for this trailhead is 6,720'.

Barr Trail - The Barr Trail climbs the eastern face of Pikes Peak. It has the largest elevation gain of any single trail in Colorado.

Bottomless Pit Trail - Bottomless Pit Trail stems from the Barr Trail west of Barr Camp. It provides a view of the sharp crags and interesting rock formations that form Pikes Peak.

Elk Park Trail - Elk Park Trail leads from the Pikes Peak Toll Road to Barr Camp. Users may take a short spur to an abandoned mining town from this trail.

Severy Creek Trail - Severy Creek Trail has been closed to protect the Greenback Cutthroat Trout, an endangered species, from whirling disease.
